5 Reasons Why You Should Join Your Local Library

10/08/2017

I adore the library. Any library. It doesn't matter whether I'm a member or not, I can happily browse for a few hours appreciating all the used and loved books. Nowadays people seem so engrossed in their eBooks, audio books, or Kindles that they seem to forget there are buildings dedicated entirely to books! Okay, may be being a little dramatic, but the amount of younger people who have joined the library in recent years has dropped dramatically and that both makes me feel blue and worries the heck out of me. Some families can't afford new books, digital or not, and children depend on these incredible buildings to introduce them to magical worlds. So, if you aren't a member of your local library, here are my top 5 reasons why you ought to be.

A Free Escape From Reality
You know, if you join a library, you get an unlimited amount of free books to borrow? I know, right? That is news you just haven't heard of before. Heh. But really, everybody knows it but not all take advantage of this and yet complain that they can't afford to buy books to read and instead can only stream movies on Netflix.. logic? Nuh. Nuh-uh. Use your local library for it's main purpose, people!

Book Sales
Who doesn't love cheap books? This is a far more common thing in the US, but I do believe there are a few sale sections scattered around some speciality libraries in the UK. It may seem like a weird notion, going to the library to buy books and not borrow, but if you're a book lover, you want your own personal bookshelf to be overflowing with your own copies of mystical tales. At least in the US, you don't need to be a member of the library to buy anything from them, but I'm not overly sure on the UK. If you know, catch me up on the Library goss!

Studying
I watch a lot of Youtubers, and many seem to study in coffee shops because it gets out them out of the house. Yet, they often complain about the noise. Um... libraries? Quiet, you can usually take your own coffee in a thermos, and free WiFi. Not only are you ticking off what you require for a happy studying environment, but you'll save some money in the long run.

Involving Yourself In Community Projects

It's always nice to give back. Especially when it comes to community projects. I've said it once and I'll say it again, you can't expect local events to continue if you don't lend a helping hand every now and again. The library is a great place to start. There are always notices up at libraries asking for volunteers or a little help, do it! If you're like me and painfully shy, this is a good place to start when it comes to coming out of your shell. People are friendly at volunteer based events, trust me on that one. You're all there for the same reason. Plus if you're currently studying or in high school, it'll look good on a CV. Always good to look into it.

Online Cataloguing
Okay, so you may not want to go into a library and look around because you're a demon with no soul. I'm joking, you may just be super busy. But nowadays we're so modern that most libraries have an awesome online catalogue that allows you to order books to the library to be picked up, download E-Books, renew books.. you name it. You can do it from the comfort of your own home. No excuses!

BONUS REASONS:

Keeping Up To Date With New Releases
Much like in a book store, the library will have a "New In" section. You know whats even better than looking at a shelf of new novels? Knowing you can read any of them for free.

Social Anxiety
Of course, this one is highly dependant on you. But as someone who suffers with social anxiety, I personally class my library as a safe zone. I don't know whether it's due to the comfort that the books bring or the sheer fact that you have to speak in hushed words, but I feel content to be solely myself.

Free Clean Public Bathrooms
If you ever find yourself on a lengthy roadtrip and need a bathroom, skip the standard McDonalds and instead find the nearest library. Not only will you satisfy your need to piddle, but maybe you can have a look around. Take some book-worthy shots for Instagram, see if they have a sale section..
